Why October is the best month to start your holiday gift list

October 10, 2026 · 2 min read

December gets treated like the start of holiday shopping. By the time it arrives, it’s actually closer to the end of the window that matters. The good, specific ideas, the ones built on something someone mentioned months ago, need to have already been noticed and kept somewhere. October is roughly when that runway starts.

The math doesn’t work if you start in December

A typical holiday list covers more people than any other stretch of the year: parents, siblings, partners, close friends, sometimes coworkers, all landing in the same few weeks. The same lead-time argument that applies to a single birthday applies here multiplied by however many people are on the list, which means the three-week minimum for one person becomes a much longer runway once you’re doing it for ten.

What October actually buys you

  • Time to notice, not just to shop. Two extra months of ordinary conversations where someone mentions something in passing, which is exactly the material a specific gift is built from, instead of forcing a guess in mid-December.
  • Better availability. Popular items and experience-based gifts, classes, reservations, limited releases, sell out or book up as the season progresses. October is well before that crunch starts.
  • Room to plan the harder gifts. Anything that requires custom work, shipping time, or coordinating with other people, a group gift, a shared present, needs lead time that December doesn’t have left to give.
  • A calmer version of the season. Spreading the noticing and the buying across three months instead of three weeks changes the whole holiday season from a scramble into something closer to actually enjoyable.

Starting early only works if you keep what you notice

None of this works by just deciding to “start early” in the abstract. It works by capturing the specific things people mention the moment they come up, from October through December, rather than trying to think of ten good ideas cold in the final week. Morrowyn is where that goes, so October’s head start is still there to use when the actual list gets built.
